Dry versus Canned Beans

Dry versus Canned Beans: have you ever wondered which is better?

We used to always buy cans of cooked canned beans and one day we took a look at the dry bean section. This was back when we were buying non-organic food but we now eat an exclusively organic diet. We have listed the local (Philadelphia, PA) prices for dry versus canned beans, both non-organic and organic:

Red Kidney Beans (pretty true for most beans)

Organic Dry Organic Canned Non-organic Dry Non-organic Canned
$2.99/lb $1.25/15 oz $1.00/lb $1.00/15 oz
Yield 7.5 cups cooked 1.75 cups cooked 6 cups cooked 2 cups cooked
Cost per Cup $0.40 $0.71 $0.17 $0.50

Whether you are eating organic or non-organic food we hope you can see that dry beans are the clear winner. Not only is the price lower but you have no added preservatives. Canned beans are the easier option and require no preparation. However, with minimal effort and little planning, dry beans are just as easy and cheaper.

Instructions for Cooking Red Kidney Beans:

  1. Rinse and sort beans (removing stones and impurities). Add rinsed beans to a large bowl and cover with 8 cups of water. Then place in fridge and let it sit overnight.
  2. Rinse beans and add to a large pot. Cover with water until water level is about 2 inches above the beans. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1.5 hours, adding more water as necessary.

While the total time getting from dry beans to cooked beans may seem long, this recipe requires very little hands on preparation. This is a great way to save money if you’re currently using canned organic beans. If you’re transitioning over from canned non-organic beans to dry organic beans you can enjoy the health benefits of freshly prepared organic food at a lower price.
